Am staying in touch with my contact in Tehran as it seems both sides in the stand off are hardening.  Here’s the latest message I received on Monday:

I just got an update from my contact in Tehran, where it’s about 11:30pm local time.  He says, “There is a quasi-state of martial law in the capital city. We just passed through a Basiji (state militia) road check. Older and younger Basijis, holding huge guns, were checking out passing cars for potential ‘troublemakers.’   Meanwhile, despite the Supreme Leader’s stark warning against the demonstrators, many went on their rooftops and shouted ‘allah Akbar’ (God is Great!). Well, the phone did not ring.  But I’m staying in touch with my contact in Iran via email and today’s latest update from him ended with these words, “A strange feeling has descended here.”  Regardless of whether or not demonstrations continue, he senses something and says he will lay low for now.

I’m in the midst of an email dialogue with a friend in Iran.  He’s an expert on Iran and Islamic Affairs at the University of California San Diego, but right now he’s listening to anti-Ahmadinejad chants along the rooftops near his location in Tehran.  He told me about an hour ago he thought, but could not confirm, that he was hearing gunshots. He’s in Iran to write a new book and I’m sure with this, he has many chapters in his head.
